Weight limits exist because disposal facilities charge by weight, and trucks have legal weight restrictions for safe transport.

What Are Overage Fees?

If your 40-yard load exceeds the included 4 tons, you'll be charged an overage fee (also called tonnage fee or extra weight fee).

Typical Overage Fee Rates:

• General debris: billed per ton over the included allowance
• Approved lowboy material: no tonnage-based overage charges when loaded level with the top of the walls, never above the rim, subject to safe/legal hauling limits
• Construction debris: billed per ton over the included allowance
• Concrete, dirt, rock and sand: quoted by material category — call or text for current rates

Heaviest Materials (Most Likely to Cause Overages)

1. Concrete & Asphalt

Weight: 3,000-4,000 lbs per cubic yard
Example: A full 10-yard dumpster of concrete = 30,000-40,000 lbs (15-20 tons!)
Risk level: EXTREME

Tip: Use the 10-yard lowboy for approved concrete loads. Load level with the top of the walls, never above the rim, subject to safe/legal hauling limits.

2. Dirt & Soil

Weight: 2,000-3,000 lbs per cubic yard (when compacted)
Example: Half-full 40-yard dumpster of dirt = 20,000-30,000 lbs (10-15 tons)
Risk level: EXTREME

Tip: Wet soil weighs even more. Use the 10-yard lowboy for approved dirt loads, loaded level with the top of the walls, never above the rim, subject to safe/legal hauling limits. Do not use the 40-yard for dirt.

Weight: 1.5-2.5 lbs per square foot
Example: 500 sq ft of drywall = 750-1,250 lbs

Lightest Materials (Low Overage Risk)

✅ Household Junk

Furniture, boxes, clothing, toys, decorations—all relatively light. You'll likely fill the dumpster to capacity before hitting weight limits.

✅ Wood Framing

2x4s, plywood, lumber—light compared to concrete or dirt. Construction framing debris rarely causes overages unless mixed with heavy materials.

✅ Yard Waste

Branches, leaves, grass clippings, shrubs—very light. Even wet yard waste rarely exceeds weight limits.

✅ Insulation & Carpet

Both bulky but lightweight. You'll run out of space before hitting weight limits.

How to Avoid Overage Fees

1. Be Honest About Your Materials

When requesting a quote, tell us EXACTLY what you're disposing of. If it's concrete, dirt, brick, or roofing, we'll recommend appropriate weight limits or sizes.

2. Keep Heavy and Light Materials Separate

Use the 10-yard lowboy for approved heavy material and keep trash, wood and drywall out of heavy loads. Use the 40-yard for high-volume, lighter debris.

3. Don't Overfill

Material must stay below the top edge of the dumpster for safe transport. Overfilled dumpsters are heavier AND may require extra pickup fees.

How Dumpsters Are Weighed

When we pick up your dumpster, it goes to a certified disposal facility with truck scales. The process:

1. Tare weight: Empty truck + empty dumpster (recorded before your delivery)
2. Gross weight: Loaded truck + full dumpster (recorded at disposal)
3. Net weight: Gross weight - Tare weight = Your debris weight

The disposal facility provides a weight ticket showing the exact tonnage. We send a copy with your final invoice if overages apply.

Can I Challenge Overage Fees?

Yes, if you believe there's an error. Reputable companies provide certified weight tickets from licensed scales. If the math seems wrong, ask for documentation.

Valid Reasons to Dispute:

• Weight ticket shows errors or inconsistencies
• You were quoted a higher weight allowance than charged
